The most common question we get about floor coatings isn't about durability or warranty — it's about color. Specifically: "Should I go with flake or solid color?"
The practical difference
Flake floors hide everything. Oil stains, tire marks, dust, dirt — the random texture of the flake camouflages it all. You can go months without mopping and the floor still looks clean from 10 feet away.
Solid floors show everything. Every footprint, every water spot, every bit of dust. But when they're clean, they look like a showroom floor — smooth, reflective, almost glass-like.
When to pick flake
- You use your garage daily for parking
- You do any kind of work in the garage
- You want low maintenance
- You have kids who track in dirt
- You store lawn equipment or bikes
When to pick solid color
- The space is more showroom than workspace
- You don't mind weekly cleaning
- You want maximum light reflection
- The garage is climate-controlled
- You're going for a specific aesthetic
Think of it this way: flake is forgiving, solid is impressive.
The maintenance reality
Both finishes are easy to clean — we're talking about polyaspartic topcoats that wipe clean with a damp cloth. The difference is how often you'll need to clean them.
With flake, you can spot-clean spills when they happen and do a full mop maybe once a month. With solid color, you'll probably want to sweep weekly and mop every 2–3 weeks to keep it looking its best.
Color selection
For flake floors, we typically recommend earth tones — grays, tans, and browns — that complement the natural variation in the flake pattern. Our most popular combinations are:
- Comet — steel blue flake on black base
- Shoreline — warm beige flake on tan base
- Stonehenge — cool gray flake on charcoal base
For solid colors, the world is your oyster. Light grays show dirt less than pure white, while charcoal and black create dramatic contrast with white walls and bright lighting.
